Parent Shaves Head to Raise Funds for Greystanes

Parent Heather Sutherland has recently taken on the role of Fundraising Representative at Coles Katoomba and is organising a community fundraising event, the Coles Katoomba Shave, which will take place at the store on Friday 11 October at midday.

Heather and her colleague Brock Bugden have both volunteered to have their heads shaved to raise funds for their chosen not for profit organisation – Heather for the Greystanes Foundation, the fundraising arm of Greystanes Disability Services based in Leura, and Brock for the Leukemia Foundation.

Heather Sutherland and Brock Bugden will bravely take part in the Coles Katoomba Shave to raise funds for their chosen charities - the Greystanes Foundation and the Leukemia Foundation.

For Heather Sutherland, her decision to support Greystanes is personal. “I was driving home one day and had this light bulb moment. I decided I should do this to support an organisation that’s close to me, and for me that’s Greystanes.”

Heather’s daughter Rachel lives in supported accommodation run by Greystanes Disability Services. As Heather describes it, “Greystanes saved my life.” Rachel has multiple disabilities and complex health care needs and “for the first ten years of Rachel’s life I only had about 3 hours sleep each night, because her support needs are so high. And with two other children to look after as well, it just wasn’t sustainable.”

“Greystanes has taken on my role 24/7 when I can’t be there, and I know that Rachel is happy and well supported.”

Greystanes Disability Services has evolved from its original beginnings as Greystanes Children's Home into a community-based service providing a range of individualised services to people with disability and their families, including seven houses in the Blue Mountains and Nepean areas that provide supported accommodation for people with multiple disabilities and complex health care needs. Greystanes has enthusiastically embraced person centred approaches and is preparing for the changes that will come with the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Donations to support the Greystanes Foundation and the Leukemia Foundation via the Coles Katoomba Shave event can be made at the Service Counter at Coles Katoomba from now until Friday 11 October.
